Car Show Presenter James May Weighs In On Elon Musk’s Twitter Debacle

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, has now taken over Twitter and is changing how the ‘verified ticks’ will work, making it so people can pay for them.

Musk took to Twitter to say:

“Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark is bull***t. Power to the people! Blue for $8/month.”

Musk went on to explain in a trail of Tweet’s to his followers:

“Price adjusted by country proportionate to purchasing power parity

“You will also get: Priority in replies, mentions & search, which is essential to defeat spam/scam; Ability to post long video & audio; Half as many ads

“And paywall bypass for publishers willing to work with us

“This will also give Twitter a revenue stream to reward content creators

“There will be a secondary tag below the name for someone who is a public figure, which is already the case for politicians”

This has obviously stirred the pot with Twitter users and has divided opinions. One Twitter user responded:

“You shouldn’t treat Twitter as business company it’s not fair for those who been using it, it is a space for people to express their opinion and their political view. It is for everyone who care about the world, and the politics , Please don’t ruin it .”

Questions have been raised around how this would work with those who already have a blue tick and also how to identify if the post you are reading is from the real person or not. For example, what would there be to stop someone from buying a tick and changing their name to a famous person.

A famous face, who already has the blue tick, adding their opinion into the mix is The Grand Tour host, James May. May wrote to his Twitter followers:

“Perhaps the ideal answer to the great Blue Tick debate is that everyone on here should be verified, haters an’ all. Then we can be accountable, and therefore responsible, digital citizens. Naïve, probably.”

Musk has clearly received a lot of backlash for this as he posted later on to say: “To all complainers, please continue complaining, but it will cost $8.” He also changed his Twitter bio to say ‘Twitter Complaint Hotline Operator’.
