The automotive industry is abuzz with speculation about potential entries into the electric vehicle (EV) pickup market by South Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia. Recent sightings of Ford’s F-150 Lightning with Korean test plates near Hyundai’s facility have intensified rumors about Hyundai or Kia’s plans to launch their own electric trucks.

In 2022, Kia laid substantial groundwork by announcing its intention to introduce two electric pickups—a dedicated model and another tailored for emerging markets. This move aligns with their strategy to begin local production of electric versions of their popular models, including mid-size SUVs and trucks, in the United States. Notably, production of Kia’s three-row electric SUV, the EV9, commenced at their Georgia plant in May, signaling a robust expansion of their electric line-up.

Hyundai, not to stay behind in the electric evolution, has confirmed the rollout of its first three-row electric SUV, the IONIQ 9, set to be unveiled later this year. However, the company has not yet announced plans for an electric truck, keeping the market speculative about their next big move.

Technical specifications for these ventures suggest a use of the E-GMP platform, which already underpins models like Kia’s EV9. This platform can potentially endow the anticipated Hyundai or Kia electric truck with up to 379 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, enabling towing capacities up to 5,000 lbs and acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. With a 99.8 kWh battery, it’s expected to offer a range of up to 304 miles, putting it in direct competition with key players in the EV market.

Additionally, Kia is preparing to launch the EV9 GT model in January, which features an all-wheel-drive dual-motor system capable of accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in just 4 seconds.
