Tesla Linked to Redwood Materials, A Recycling Firm

Redwood Materials, a company that focuses on technology to recycle and reuse manufacturing materials, has named two Tesla executives as directors of their company. We want to point out that this news does not explicitly link Tesla to Redwood Materials; it simply states that two Tesla executives have been named to a top position.

Jeffrey Straubel, Chief Techincal Officer, and Andrew Stevenson, Head of Special Projects (both at Tesla) are the two execs in question. A listing on CB Insights listed the two as directors of Redwood Materials. The company describes itself as making “advanced technology and process development for materials recycling, remanufacturing, and reuse,” on its website.

Redwood Materials was founded in 2017 and is based in Redwood City, in close proximity to Tesla, which is based in Palo Alto. We currently do not know what capacity Tesla’s involvement with Redwood Materials is, but it’s easy to see why Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, would be attracted to a company like Redwood Materials.

Throughout its existence, Tesla has always pushed forward with a focus on development in the clean energy space. Just last year, Tesla acquired SolarCity and has opened the Gigafactory which is producing battery cells for the company’s energy storage products (more Gigafactories are on the way). Tesla is also on the cusp of starting production on the Model 3, a mass-market electric car.

Using Redwood Materials, Tesla has the opportunity to own more of the supply chain, which in turn could have a positive effect on production, both with output and in a more sustainable way. With the Model 3 start date edging closer, efficiency needs to be a priority. We’ll have to wait and see what the relationship between Tesla and Redwood Materials turns out to be!
