Tesla Model S, X, and 3 Getting Power Boost In Next Firmware Update
In the coming weeks, Tesla Model S, X, and 3 will be getting a firmware update which covers an increase in power, drivability, and charging.
In a recent call with Elon Musk over the Q3 earnings, when asked how he was going to improve on the current range of cars, he explained how the Tesla team are still learning how to use their products effectively, and that they have found a way to squeeze more range and power out of the motors.
“We’re also expecting there is going to be an over-the-air improvement,” Musk says, “that will improve the power of the Model S, X, and 3. By the way, it’s coming in a few weeks. It should be on the order of 5% power improvement due to improved firmware.”
Tesla Vice President of Technology Drew Baglino also stated, “We are continuing to learn how to optimize motor control in our products. But yes, a 5% improvement for all Model 3 customers, and 3% for S and X.”
Musk adds, “I don’t think there has ever been a situation in history where you buy a car and it gets way better over time, through software.”
On top of the increased power and range, the speed of charging will increase, as will its maximum speed, all via an over-the-air update. Musk has also told us of an update to the Smart Summon coming within the next few weeks, too.
Increased performance, range, and charging speeds will definitely help with the range anxiety issues that potential buyers are still struggling with, so let’s hope this brings an extra level of confidence to those thinking of taking a dip into Tesla ownership.
