Tesla Roadster Release Pushed Back To 2021
It’s maybe not a surprise to some that the Tesla Roadster has been delayed until 2022 after it was promised that the all-electri hypercar’s production was to begin in 2020. It you hadn’t been paying attention, and while it definitely doesn’t feel like it, it’s now 2021 and we’re still yet to see anything come to fruition.
Unfortunately, the Roadster won’t be being built in 2021 either, according to a tweet sent by CEO Elon Musk. He admits that the team behind it is “finishing engineering this year” with it set to be released in 2022.
“Aiming to have release candidate design drivable late summer,” Musk adds. “Tri-motor drive system & advanced battery work were important precursors.”
The new Model S has been promised to be released with the so-called ‘Plaid powertrain’, which features three motors, 1,006 horsepower, and a 100kWh battery pack. The Roadster. however, is promised to have a 200kWh pack instead. A battery of this size and weight however won’t do the Roadster won’t do the Roadster any favours at this point however, with a smaller and lighter battery being worked on behind the scenes.
So, it’s definitely no surprise that the Roadster is being pushed back for such reasons, and this makes us wonder whether the Cybertruck will receive the same fate. These suspicions were confirmed at the latest earnings call for investors:
“If we get lucky, we’ll be able to do a few deliveries toward the end of this year, but I expect volume productions to begin in 2022,” Musk admitted.
He adds that the manufacturing equipment for the Cybertruck will be ordered soon and the engineering for the vehicle is almost complete, however when compared to road regulations, it’s likely it will need a serious revamp, especially when compared to European laws.
