The ‘Plug Wars’ Coming to a Close as Nissan Moves from CHAdeMO
With the Ariya release coming up, Nissan has made moves to stop selling cars that use the CHAdeMO charging plug outside of Japan. Even though the next generation of the port has been announced by the board in charge of such things, it will likely never see deployment outside of Asia.
Forgoing the standard of Japan and China, Nissan have joined virtually every other car maker in using the Combo or CCS port for their exported models.
Mitsubishi and Nissan were the only people putting the CHAdeMO on their cars outside of Japan, and now that the Ariya has CCS, it seems like all future models will follow.
Hyundai, Kia, and Honda all use the CCS standard, although they’re Asian car companies. The proliferation of CHAdeMO plugs in Japan and China wasn’t enough to convince them to not adopt the CCS as an international standard for their recent cars.
Tesla has their own proprietary plug, which offers some advantages in the way of exclusivity. That has meant that in foreign countries, Tesla owners have had to use adapter kits to charge.
Although, now Tesla has started selling a CCS charger Model 3 in European markets.
Since the CHAdeMO has a tight grip on Japan, it’s not going anywhere for a while. On the other hand, the Leaf was the only car sold in the US with CHAdeMO, and it has been noticeably absent from Nissan’s roadmap.
