Tesla Model S Plaid to Reach 200 MPH with Track Package and More Surprises

Back in 2021, Tesla unveiled the extraordinary Model S Plaid high-performance car with some amazing promises. They said it could go from 0-60 mph in just 2 seconds and reach a top speed of 200 mph. But, the car hasn’t quite lived up to those expectations yet.

As it turns out, the problem wasn’t a lack of power, but the tires and brakes. Car and Driver reported that Tesla had to use software to limit the Plaid’s top speed to 162 mph. However, things are about to change.

In June, Tesla will be launching a new Model S Track Package, which comes with new tires and brakes. Tesla says that this package includes “aluminum forged wheels, track-ready tires and brake fluid, new carbon-silicon carbide rotors, and one-piece forged calipers with high-performance pads.” They’re also throwing in a software update to unlock that higher top speed.

The Track Package will be priced between $15,000 and $20,000. While it might sound expensive, it’s actually pretty standard for high-performance cars. In fact, similar packages from luxury brands like Porsche can cost just as much as a small car.

Tesla’s order page also notes that customers can order the brakes as a standalone product. This means that the price range listed could be for both the brake package alone and the whole brake and tire package together.

The tires included in the package are Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R models, which are only suitable for use when temperatures are above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s common for owners of extreme performance cars to save these tires for track use and switch to a multi-use set for daily driving.

Tesla is offering the Track Package for new Model S buyers or for anyone who has a Model S produced since 2021. So, if you’ve been waiting for the Model S Plaid to reach its full potential, the wait is almost over!
