Tesla Is Reopening Gigafactory New York To Produce Ventilators In Emergency Response To COVID-19
Elon Musk, Tesla and SpaceX CEO, has shown incredible heroism after recently flying in over 1,200 ventilators to help with the ongoing emergency response to the spread of COVID-19 in Los Angeles. Now, he’s reopening Gigafactory New York to start production of additional respirators after several hospitals are struggling to look after the sheer number of patients.
Previously, Musk has expressed that the US “may have passed the infection point for US cases,” but he is willing to help any way he can, especially as New York has been hit harder than anywhere else – likely due to its population density.
Tesla had shut down its New York Gigafactory earlier this week after the area was put into lockdown, but it is to be reopened.
“Giga New York will reopen for ventilator production as soon as humanly possible. We will do anything in our power to help the citizens of New York.”
Gigafactory New York is set up to produce solar roof tiles, plus other products like the Supercharger V3. We were expecting more product announcements after a factory meeting in April, but it’s unclear whether or not this will still go ahead.
As well as this, Tesla is planning to produce ventilators at its Fremont Factory according to Omar Ishra, CEO of Medtronic, who announced that the factory will be altered to create the ventilators quickly. In the meantime, these factory closures will allow Tesla to assess its production lines and carry out any improvements and upgrades over the coming months.
