Tesla has included a brilliant feature in the new update 2020.8.1 that has been rolled out recently. Now, instead of the owner’s phone connecting to the car’s Bluetooth when they go near the car or open the door, the car will pair with a smartphone only when someone sits in the driver’s seat and all the doors are closed.
The idea came from Tesla owner Rob Hoeh, who shared the idea with Elon Musk after seeing it on Reddit.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk then confirmed that it would be coming in January.
“When a Tesla is unlocked and you’re in the middle of a call, it’s pretty eager to switch the audio from the phone over to the car. This can be frustrating when you’re in the middle of a call and you are not even inside the car yet. Or when you’re near the car and someone else gets in the car a similar thing happens,” Hoehn wrote on a Tesla Ideas website.
“Thanks for mentioning! Elon replied. “We should’ve done this ages ago.”
This simple solution stops one of the most annoying parts of the Bluetooth connectivity between a smartphone and a Tesla. It may be minor, but it produces a lot of annoyance when your phone connects to the car without you wanting it to.

To improve the audio transition from phone-to-car when entering your vehicle, Bluetooth now connects to your paired phone only after you are sitting in the driver’s seat and all doors are closed. As a reminder, you can pair your phone to Bluetooth by touching the Bluetooth icon on the top of your touchscreen and then “Add New Device.”
