Electrify America Pitches EV-Charger Emoji for World Emoji Day
One of the most important social changes in our time will be the switch from gas to electric vehicles. The only problem keeping us back, is the lack of an emoji.
Alas, Electrify America has something to say about that! The company, which operates the largest network of open fast-charging stations in the US, has an emoji to pitch for the upcoming World Emoji Day on July 17.
The simple design fits right in with every other emoji I’ve ever seen. In fact, it’s surprising one doesn’t already exist. According to Electrify, most EV drivers use the gas-pump emoji and a lightning bolt. ⛽⚡
Apparently, Electrify America pitched an emoji to the Unicode Consortium this time last year. The Consortium, who controls emojis, rejected the design. According to feedback, they didn’t like how the previous entry included the car and the charger.
Emojis represent today’s emotions, feelings and activities, and when it comes to transportation, that should include electric vehicle culture,Pushing for an emoji that reflects the experiences of EV drivers is part of Electrify America’s goal to increase EV awareness and adoption, and support the transition to a cleaner energy future – a shift that will have impact on Americans and people around the world. – Rich Steinberg, director of marketing, communications and Green City initiatives at Electrify America.
As the number of public chargers skyrockets over the coming years, it will be more important to talk about them in our texts. The number of available chargers increased by %60 in 2019 alone, and projections see the global number exceeding 29 million by 2030.
If you’d like to help, Electrify America has set up a Change.org petition, which has surprisingly few signatures at the time of writing. It’s probably the only Change.org petition I’ve ever signed that doesn’t have to do with Area 51 or Tupac.
