Ford Competes With Tesla By Releasing Bi-Directional Charger
Ford has brought its home charging station to the market to compete with Tesla’s Powerwall, the Ford Charge Station Pro.
Ford revealed the F-150 Lightning in May 2021 and one feature that sparked a lot of interest was the bi-directional charging. This means that you can not only charge your truck but you can also use the power that the truck has to charge anything else, such as your home or another vehicle.
We are seeing some other cars being released with bi-directional charging like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, but this is the first time we have seen it on a truck which needs a much larger battery. Having the larger battery gives the F-150 Lightning the opportunity to give back-up power if there is an outage so could act as a home generator.
The Ford Charge Station Pro acts as a charging station and bi-directional charger and is offered a pretty reasonable price at $1,310 for the charger and then installation would be on top of that.
Yes, that is more than the Tesla Powerwall which is $550 but the spec looks to be so much more. It has 80 amps of max current which is twice the amount of the normal chargers, and the Extended Range adds 3p miles of range per range where the Standard Range adds 19 miles per hour. Going the other way, the system can provide up to 9.6 kW back to your home when working alongside Ford’s Home Integration System during the installation.
Don’t get too excited though, as it is currently showing as sold out so this is definitely one to keep tabs on.
