Boring Company Launches Contest to Tunnel Faster than a Snail
Get your thinking caps ready and collect your most determined team members, because The Boring Company has just announced their first Not-a-Boring completion, which will take place in Spring of next year. Like the previous iterations of the Hyperloop competitions, this one will reach out to any level of entrant to find crowd sourced alternatives to engineering solutions.
In short, engineers will be tasked with boring a small tunnel at a faster pace than a snail could squirm the same length.
This competition challenges teams to come up with tunneling solutions and answer the question, ‘Can you beat the snail?’ The Boring Company is gauging interest from everyone (students, companies, hobbyists, etc.) from around the world to design, build, and race their own tunneling solution at The Boring Company’s Dig-a-Factory in the first Not-a-Boring Competition in Spring 2021.
Teams will be tasked with tunneling 30 meters, using a diameter of half a meter, or cross section of .02 square meters. Apparently, to judge the tunnels there will be a remote-controlled Tesla vehicle.
The categories for the competition are: fastest to complete, fastest to complete including driving surface, and most accurate guidance system.
Clearly speed is of the essence here, and while snails aren’t exactly known to be speed demons, they typically outperform tunneling equipment.
